Signs, Signs, Everywhere there is Signs

What a beautiful fall like day it is here deep in the south.     Just came inside from carving a pumpkin with my son and his sweet girlfriend.     Gotta love fall and all the fun activities associated with it!

That white bag looks like a little ghost, doesn’t it?

I was taking a quick look at my blog favorites and saw where Funky Junk Interiors was having a sign party so I thought I would join in.     In fact, she has several parties going on there so check it out….there is something for everyone to enjoy.  

I don’t have any cute signs to show that I created myself.     I failed miserably at the one I tried to make so I will show a few that I have out in my house.

This cute little sign is in my kitchen.     I bought it at Pier One a couple of years ago.     My scarecrow wanted to be in the picture also.     How could I say no to that precious little face?

This sign is hung above my sunporch door which leads out to my garden.     I found it at either Hobby Lobby or Michaels a couple of years ago.

I may be stretching this “sign” here a bit, but this birdhouse is a replica of the red barns that dotted the south and advertised Rock City which is located in Chattanooga, TN.     A painter was hired by Rock City to travel the nation’s highways and paint barns red in exchange for letting him paint three words on the roof:  See Rock City.     Clever marketing ploy.

This last sign has sentimental value to us.    It came from my husband’s grandmother’s country store in Pike County, Mississippi.    We also have some old thermometers from her store.

Love Me Some Pumpkins

As a lover of pumpkins, I was thrilled to see that Beth at Food As Art was hosting a Pumpkin Party so I decided to join in with all you pumpkin lovers and share my pumpkins with you.

The white pumpkins are my only real pumpkins.    The rest are fake faux.    Love the little mini boos.    These cuties sit on the island in my kitchen.

This glittery pumpkin which was a Home Goods find occupies the end of my fireplace mantel.    I added the bow.

My stained glass pumpkin sits on the hearth.     Love the way the light reflects on the tile.

This is the centerpiece of my dining table.

This was a fun modge podge project.     I covered some $1.00 pumpkins from the dollar store with animal print napkins.

This is my foyer.     The glass balls on the lamp remind me of pumpkins.

And last but not least, here is a ceramic pumpkin vignette on a small demilune table in the hallway by my foyer.

Anyone interested in a simple recipe whose only two ingredients are  pumpkin and chocolate cake mix?    If so, read on.   I have to admit that I have not made it yet, but plan to bake some of these this weekend.    This recipe came from the Hungry Girl newsletter and is a Weight Watchers Fave.

Yum Yum Brownie Muffins

1 box devil’s food cake mix

1 can solid pack pumpkin (15 oz.)

Directions:     Mix the two ingredients together.   Don’t add anything else that may be mentioned on the back, such as eggs, oil or water.    The mixture will be very thick and you will be tempted to add in other things to make the batter smoother.    DO NOT DO THIS AS IT WILL RUIN EVERYTHING!   Place batter into muffin tins or mini muffin tins lined with paper or sprayed with non-stick spray.     Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.    Makes 12 regular or 36 mini muffins.

1 muffin or 3 minis – 181 calories, 3.5g fat, 37g carbs, 2g fiber, 2g protein – 4 WW points

The Canton, MS Flea Market…"a good Southern experience”

Oh what a beautiful day it has been!     I woke up to temps in the low 60’s with a high expected of 78.    I had the day off so it was a perfect day for me and the hub to go to the flea market and craft show in Canton, Mississippi.    This flea market is held twice a year….the second Thursday in May and October.     There is a huge variety of good quality craft items, artwork, pottery, yard decorations, children’s clothes and furniture, antiques, jewelry, you name it.    They are selective about the vendors so you will not find junky items here.    I have to warn you….this post is full of pictures!    I hope you will stick with me and continue reading to the end.

Edited to add that I read in the paper this morning that there were over 1,000 vendors at the market and more than 40,000 shoppers.    No sign of recession at the Canton Flea Market.   One lady commented “I love that it is a good Southern experience.    And whether you find something or not, it’s actually a fun day.”  Amen.    I agree with that.

Check out the crowd in the street which is as far as the eye can see.

Saw lots of metalware.

The  herd of goats followed by a herd of colorful roosters really caught my eye.

Lots of historic homes in Canton….the vendors were set up in the front yards.

Another beautiful home.    There was black wicker furniture on the front porch.

I have always dreamed of having a white picket fence.     Love how it is guarded by cherubs.     See the fountain in the back yard?

One of the unique features of Canton is the square.     Vendors were set up on all sides of the courthouse in the center of the square.

Cute little antique store on the square.    I thought the prices were reasonable and want to go back when it’s not so crowded.

This cute little white church had a red door!      Incidentally, if you have never tried comeback sauce before, google the recipe.     It is delicious!

First time I had ever seen a bottle tree chandelier.    I loved the multi-colored one.     The hubby thought it was tacky.   HA!

These lovely gourds were saying “oh no, please don’t take my picture.”

I don’t know the history of this old cabin.     The old jail is directly behind it.

Pumpkins of all sizes and shapes were everywhere you looked.

Lots of scarecrows and birdhouses also.

There is always one item that seems to be the best seller.   Today it was wreaths adorned with mesh fabric.

Lots of good food also.     Anybody craving alligator on a stick?

Now you know I couldn’t leave the market without purchasing something for myself.     I bought 3 rolls of the mesh fabric @ 8.00 a roll.     Not sure yet what I am going to do with it….perhaps wrap it around my Christmas tree….might make a wreath….do any of you talented people have any creative ideas for the mesh????

One roll is red with gold stripes, one is a red, green and white plaid, and the other one is gold.    They are sparkly when the light hits them.    I love sparkly.

I also bought two watches (2 for $20), a pair of red earrings ($3.00)and two cute Halloween themed pins for a dollar apiece.     Love the animal print and bling on the watches.

I hope you enjoyed the tour of my trip to the Canton Flea Market as much as I did.    People from all over the southeast come to it each year.      It would be worth your time to plan a trip and visit it for yourself.
